The United Way of Berks County team was excited to see many familiar faces at our recent virtual Top 100 Coordinator meeting. Although this year’s meeting was virtual, we were grateful to have the opportunity to come together. These meetings are important to the success of the Campaign because the Top 100 companies are a crucial part of helping United Way achieve a successful Campaign each year. In 2020, the Top 100 organizations represented 95% of all workplace giving or $8.3 million.
After a welcome from United Way Relationship Manager Michelle Gettel, the coordinators had the opportunity to officially meet the 2021 Campaign Co-Chairs Dick and Angela Ehst. Along with showing appreciation for the hard work of the coordinators, the Ehsts shared about the work they are already doing to ensure United Way will have another successful Campaign in 2021.
United Way President Tammy White offered a recap of the successes of the 2020 Campaign and provided details around the $10 million grant from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Tammy shared this one-time gift will impact our community for the better, and that United Way and our Board of Directors are working hard to ensure the grant will be put to good use. Tammy wrapped up her comments with an update on the Berks COVID-19 Response Fund, which has awarded 50 grants to more than 40 local nonprofits.
Elise Chesson, the Executive Director of Family Promise, then told the group how a Berks COVID-19 Response Grant has helped her organization and the people they serve. She shared the stories of two clients who have directly benefited from the grant, and when she was finished there was not a dry eye on the screen. Her stories were a great reminder of the impact people like YOU are making in the lives of Berks Countians every day.
As the meeting was coming to an end, those in attendance were encouraged to mark their calendars for upcoming United Way events and were also made aware of United Way’s new e-newsletter. This quarterly newsletter is a great way to stay connected with United Way and learn about the difference people like YOU are making each and every day in our community.
