Ever wondered how to expand your community involvement but don’t know where to start? Sonia Rodriguez, one of our newest ELU Cabinet members, has some valuable advice to share. When asked about her experiences, she encourages ELU members to, “Show up to your first event. Seriously, just show up.” According to Sonia, once you take that initial step, everything falls into place. She continues, “ELU events are known for their welcoming and friendly atmosphere, where you can truly be yourself.” Whether you want to immerse yourself fully or ease into involvement gradually, ELU provides a supportive space. You can also encourage your friend to join ELU and invite them to come to your first event if it helps you feel more comfortable!
For Sonia, being involved in the greater community holds deep significance. She shares, “it is important for me to be involved in the greater community because I have a passion for helping others.” Engaging with ELU has opened her eyes to the multitude of organizations and services available in Berks County, which has enabled her to learn more about her community and contributed to its betterment. Moreover, the networking opportunities within ELU have created connections with new people, which has fostered a sense of belonging and collaboration.
When it comes to volunteer leadership, Sonia has a powerful message. She believes in the concept of “think globally, act locally”. Sonia thinks this is important because it, “urges people to consider ways to take action in their own community, even if they feel it won’t make a huge difference.” By embracing this mindset, Sonia encourages others to take meaningful action right where they are.
Sonia’s journey as an ELU member highlights the transformative power of volunteerism and the beauty of making a difference in the world around us. Her passion is an inspiration for others looking to embark on their own fulfilling volunteer journeys. So, why not follow Sonia’s lead and dive into the world of community involvement this summer? With ELU, you’ll find a supportive community ready to help you make a difference.
