Impact
Helping children build a strong foundation for success
United Way invests in programs that foster caring relationships, offer positive role models, reinforce the importance of staying in school, promote healthy and active lifestyles and help kids develop the social and emotional skills to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
Helping families gain long-term stability
Nearly two in five Berks County families struggle to make ends meet. When we help families in our local community avert financial crisis, and improve financial stability, we can prevent more costly consequences that affect our entire community. United Way invests in supportive housing programs and pathways to improve personal financial management and to obtain employment.
Helping individuals gain greater quality of life
Healthy children learn better and healthy adults achieve a greater quality of life. United Way invests in preventative and interventional programming to address physical and mental health.
Helping individuals meet basic needs and in crisis situations
United Way invests in programs to help families or individuals navigate hard times and to prevent hunger and homelessness by providing critical services for vulnerable families during urgent and crisis situations.
Strong Partnerships Create Strong Impact
Ryan struggles with social interactions and transitioning from one environment to another. He has challenges making friends and connecting with peers at school.
A safe environment made all the difference for Ryan. He has made many friends at Hang Time and Camp Lily, two programs at Easterseals, a United Way agency partner. Ryan looks forward to seeing his Hang Time friends every week. It gives him time to be a typical teen hanging with his gang on Friday night. He usually sticks to what he knows and likes. His Hang Time crew encourages him to be more adventurous, like trying a spooky hayride for the first time. Even though the adventure scared him, he managed his emotions and was really proud of himself when it was over; his friends were proud of him too.
Like all teens, Ryan needs a social network to develop his identity and self-confidence. It is often difficult for children with disabilities to find a social group that is embracing and supportive. At Hang Time and Camp Lily, Ryan is surrounded by peers who accept and support him. His friends play a significant role in his development and empower him to try new things and practice his social skills.
Partnering with United Way is a win for all of us. Our company is helping to address community needs, our employees are engaged in the ways that matter most to them, and our neighbors, friends and family members benefit from our efforts. Working with United Way gives us a meaningful way to improve lives and strengthen our community.”
